Haru 2025 Rikishi Preview
Here's a look at all 42 Makuuchi rikishi before the March sumo tournament.
We’ve got a little over a week before sumo starts for the Haru basho on March 9th. Read this preview for the entirety of the top division to pick your opening lineup on Fantasizr.
01 Yokozuna East Hoshoryu
Hoshoryu Tomokatsu | 豊昇龍 智勝
Tatsunami | Mongolia
Birthdate: May 22, 1999
Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 148 kg | 326 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #1 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 12-3; Yusho
Hoshoryu is your new Yokozuna, the sport's 74th Grand Champion and the only current one with Terunofuji's retirement. His 12-3 Playoff Yusho following a 13-2 Yusho isn't the most stunning promotion, but he has been good of late. He is also not yet 26 and a master of many techniques. Remarkably, this could be a new Yokozuna with room to grow.
02 Ozeki East Onosato
Onosato Daiki | 大の里 泰輝
Nishonoseki | Ishikawa
Birthdate: June 7, 2000
Height: 192 cm | 6' 4"
Weight: 185 kg | 407 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #2 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 10-5
Having gone 19-11 over his two basho as an Ozeki, Onosato could be seen as a bit of a disappointment. This is also a young man with a 75-30 career record, 2 Yusho, 1 Jun Yusho, and 8 Special Prizes in his 7 basho Makuuchi career. Add to that background of dominance an ideal build and skills galore, this is still a rikishi whose best is ahead of him.
03 Ozeki West Kotozakura
Kotozakura Masahiro | 琴櫻 傑太
Sadogatake | Chiba
Birthdate: November 19, 1997
Height: 189 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 181 kg | 398 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #1 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 5-10
Kotozakura's Yokozuna promotion run fell completely apart in January. His 5-10 looked like the result of some small injury that didn't allow him to use his full strength in matches, although nothing was confirmed. It's worth remembering that the Scion of Sadogatake is still 27 and an Ozeki who went 14-1 just two basho ago.
04 Sekiwake East Daieisho
Daieisho Hayato | 大栄翔 勇人
Oitekaze | Saitama
Birthdate: November 10, 1993
Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 164 kg | 361 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Sekiwake West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 11-4
In theory, a 14-1 by Daieisho could give the long serving lower Sanyaku rikishi an Ozeki promotion. That is a long shot, and his real calling card has been consistency. Another 11 wins from Daieisho, built from steady thrusting, isn't really far fetched.
05 Sekiwake West Oho
Oho Konosuke | 王鵬 幸之介
Otake | Tokyo
Birthdate: February 14, 2000
Height: 191 cm | 6' 3"
Weight: 180 kg | 396 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #3 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 12-3; Jun-Yusho, Technique Prize
Oho had a banner basho, only spoiled at the end by losing his playoff match to Hoshoryu. His 12 wins was by far his best performance, along with getting his first Jun-Yusho and first Special Prize. His three regulation losses were to Hoshoryu, Kotozakura, and Kirishima, so he clearly has more work to do to beat the very best. Yet the eye test showed Oho had a new decisiveness and surety in the ring in January.
06 Komusubi East Kirishima
Kirishima Tetsuo | 霧島 鐵雄
Otowayama | Mongolia
Birthdate: April 24, 1996
Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 150 kg | 330 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #1 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 11-4; Fighting Spirit Prize
Kirishima had a bounce-back of sorts, seemingly spurred on by being the final win by Terunofuji on Day Three. Kirishima unleashed a ten match win streak. His Day 14 loss to Kinbozan knocked him out of the yusho race, but he still tallied 11 victories and earned a Fighting Spirit Prize as well as a return to Sanyaku.
07 Komusubi West Abi
Abi Masatora | 阿炎 政虎
Shikoroyama | Saitama
Birthdate: May 4, 1994
Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 166 kg | 365 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Komusubi East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Abi was 7-4, then lost his last four matches to fall back out of Sanyaku. He's 30, never developed real wrinkles to his sumo, and yet he feels like he could get 10 wins in upper Makushita. Abi is what he is, but what he is is a tough opponent for any rikishi thanks to his two-hands thrusting style and nifty footwork at the edge.
08 Maegashira #1 East Wakatakakage
Wakatakakage Atsushi | 若隆景 渥
Arashio | Fukushima
Birthdate: December 6, 1994
Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 132 kg | 290 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Komusubi West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Wakatakakage dropped his last two matches to finish on 7-8 and fall out of Sanyaku. He is now 30 and had to come back from a massive knee injury last year. This is his likely ceiling, but he also competes so hard in every match that it feels like he could pile up wins.
09 Maegashira #1 West Wakamotoharu
Wakamotoharu Minato | 若元春 港
Arashio | Fukushima
Birthdate: October 5, 1993
Height: 187 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 150 kg | 330 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Sekiwake East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 6-9
6-9 from Wakamotoharu was a bit disappointing, but he was 1-7 on Day 8, so everything is relative. He won't fall far enough to get a different slate of opponents. He does have the ability to still beat anyone in the top ranks on his day. Just watch out that he's 31 and probably won't improve from here.
10 Maegashira #2 East Gonoyama
Gonoyama Toki | 豪ノ山 登輝
Takekuma | Osaka
Birthdate: April 7, 1998
Height: 178 cm | 5' 10"
Weight: 164 kg | 361 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #3 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Gonoyama's 8-7 puts him right on the cusp of a Sanyaku slot. The pusher-thruster hasn't quite proven that he can beat the very top rikishi yet, and that challenge will loom larger in March. He could take his career to the next level, but he needs to find a new gear to his sumo.
11 Maegashira #2 West Chiyoshoma
Chiyoshoma Fujio | 千代翔馬 富士雄
Kokonoe | Mongolia
Birthdate: July 20, 1991
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 139 kg | 306 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #5 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Chiyoshoma somehow was in the yusho race through Day Nine after winning his first 7 in a row. He lost five in a row from Day 10 to Day 14, which was also by far his toughest stretch of opponents (two Ozeki, two Sekiwake, and a Maegashira 1.) He's not any different than the wild man of the dohyo he used to be, just older, wiser, and more controlled to make it work better.
12 Maegashira #3 East Tobizaru
Tobizaru Masaya | 翔猿 正也
Oitekaze | Tokyo
Birthdate: April 24, 1992
Height: 173 cm | 5' 8"
Weight: 135 kg | 297 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #2 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Tobizaru earned the final victory over Terunofuji on Day Four, causing the Yokozuna to retire. After that, Tobizaru was underwhelming and ended on 7-8. He's nearly 33 and isn't tamping down his wild sumo at all, but he's still hanging around.
13 Maegashira #3 West Takanosho
Takanosho Nobuaki | 隆の勝 伸明
Tokiwayama | Chiba
Birthdate: November 14, 1994
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 173 kg | 381 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #1 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 6-9
Takanosho did not do well in January and so he falls back down the Banzuke. He has delivered strong performances in this range, so don't count him out. The Tokiwayama pusher-thruster has been quite streaky, so we'll know how his basho is going very early.
14 Maegashira #4 East Takayasu
Takayasu Akira | 高安 晃
Tagonoura | Ibaraki
Birthdate: February 28, 1990
Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 175 kg | 385 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #6 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Takayasu went 8-7, which is decidedly unspectacular. He also, more importantly, was healthy for the whole basho and has had a clean bill of health for three tournaments. He's just turned 35 and has a terrible injury history, but it would be good to be graced with the Old Bear's presence for a little longer.
15 Maegashira #4 West Ichiyamamoto
Ichiyamamoto Daiki | 一山本 大生
Hanaregoma | Hokkaido
Birthdate: October 1, 1993
Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 150 kg | 330 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #6 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Ichiyamamoto didn't have a winning streak longer than two matches or a losing streak longer than three matches in January. He just went out there, attacked with both arms at full force, and it worked about half the time pretty steadily. You're not getting anything different or new from Ichiyamamoto, but this is also working just enough he should keep it going.
16 Maegashira #5 East Ura
Ura Kazuki | 宇良 和輝
Kise | Osaka
Birthdate: June 22, 1992
Height: 175 cm | 5' 9"
Weight: 139 kg | 306 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #4 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Ura's hopes for a kachi-koshi fell on Day Fifteen when he got completely overwhelmed by the much bigger Onosato. This is a nice representation of Ura currently, as his tricks and cleverness work about half the time and get him in trouble the other half. He is just on the outskirts of a full Sanyaku slate, which could benefit him greatly.
17 Maegashira #5 West Kinbozan
Kinbozan Haruki | 金峰山 晴樹
Kise | Kazakhstan
Birthdate: June 24, 1997
Height: 195 cm | 6' 5"
Weight: 180 kg | 396 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #14 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 12-3; Jun-Yusho, Fighting Spirit Prize
Kinbozan was the story of Hatsu 2025, until Hoshoryu won the playoff and became a Yokozuna. Kinbozan won 12 matches and beat two Ozeki in January by doing the best version of his sumo--attacking with his considerable size. The Kazakh Giant is 27 and was in Juryo in November, but he has shown he can tangle with the best rikishi in Makuuchi.
18 Maegashira #6 East Hiradoumi
Hiradoumi Yuki | 平戸海 雄貴
Sakaigawa | Nagasaki
Birthdate: April 20, 2000
Height: 178 cm | 5' 10"
Weight: 139 kg | 306 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #5 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Hiradoumi's bare make-koshi was his third straight losing record, so it's worth remembering he is not yet 25 (but will be in April) and went 10-5 in July as a Komusubi. His all-out style is a little wearing for him, and he often struggles to turn a match around. But he's got to be high on the list of rikishi everyone else just hates having to face on a day of the basho.
19 Maegashira #6 West Takerufuji
Takerufuji Mikiya | 尊富士 弥輝也
Isegahama | Aomori
Birthdate: April 9, 1999
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 148 kg | 326 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #11 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 10-5
Takerufuji came back to Makuuchi after an injury layoff and demotion, delivering two straight 10-5 records. Those pale in comparison to his 13-2 yusho a year ago before the layoff, but back to back double-digit wins is always good. He's shooting up to Sanyaku, but upper Maegashira can easily slow even very good rikishi. His next few basho will shape his career in immense ways.
20 Maegashira #7 East Shodai
Shodai Naoya | 正代 直也
Tokitsukaze | Kumamoto
Birthdate: November 5, 1991
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 170 kg | 374 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #4 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 6-9
Shodai falls further down the Banzuke after a 6-9, which may signal he doesn't have much in the tank. The former Ozeki is 33, and he hasn't looked right consistently for years. The problem for other rikishi is that Shodai's amazing defensive sumo is still there and can absolutely cause havoc if it encounters a mistake.
21 Maegashira #7 West Tamawashi
Tamawashi Ichiro | 玉鷲 一朗
Kataonami | Mongolia
Birthdate: November 16, 1984
Height: 189 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 178 kg | 392 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #10 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Not only did Tamawashi continue to hold his own in his second basho in his 40s, he went 9-6. Nothing has changed about his sumo, as any opponent must still be ready for a hard shove to the chin and neck. If it's worked this long, why change it?
22 Maegashira #8 East Atamifuji
Atamifuji Sakutaro | 熱海富士 朔太郎
Isegahama | Shizuoka
Birthdate: September 3, 2002
Height: 185 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 188 kg | 414 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #2 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 5-10
Atamifuji finally had a disaster basho after getting 7-8 or 8-7 for five straight tournaments. The big youngster still has a bright future, although this is probably the moment for him to reconsider his sumo as he drops down to mid-Maegashira.
23 Maegashira #8 West Oshoma
Oshoma Degi | 欧勝馬 出気
Naruto | Mongolia
Birthdate: April 9, 1997
Height: 190 cm | 6' 3"
Weight: 167 kg | 367 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #9 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Oshoma got a bare kachi-koshi, which means he's a firm Maegashira now. Oshoma is a little odd, scrawny for a rikishi and pathologically opposed to ending a match with a straightforward yori-kiri or oshidashi. He'll stand up, get sideways, and turn a match around. Most importantly, he can win more than he loses now.
24 Maegashira #9 East Hakuoho
Hakuoho Tetsuya | 伯桜鵬 哲也
Miyagino | Tottori
Birthdate: August 22, 2003
Height: 181 cm | 5' 11"
Weight: 155 kg | 341 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #15 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 10-5
Hakuoho returned after being away from Makuuchi for a year and a half, and he put up a quiet 10-5. Onosato had already passed him by as the next big thing, and Kinbozan was stealing the headlines for Hatsu. So don't forget this is an immensely talented 21 year old who has already proven he can win in the top division.
25 Maegashira #9 West Endo
Endo Shota | 遠藤 聖大
Oitekaze | Ishikawa
Birthdate: October 19, 1990
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 150 kg | 330 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #7 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 6-9
Endo's performance has been steadily declining since his brief trip to Juryo in May 2024. Clearly, the over-the-hill Endo is still effective enough to be a Maegashira, but can't do well over Maegashira #10. This is a veteran with a range of skills, so he can make up for his athletic defiiciencies that aremore pronounced because of age and injury. But he can also get overwhelmed by dynamic rikishi.
26 Maegashira #10 East Nishikigi
Nishikigi Tetsuya | 錦木 徹也
Isenoumi | Iwate
Birthdate: August 25, 1990
Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 188 kg | 414 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #12 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Nishikigi is hanging in, and in a top division with Takarafuji and Tamawashi he doesn't seem special as a 34 year old veteran. But Nishikigi was unathletic for Makuuchi in his prime, and he had to overcome some serious Juryo sojourns. He won't be spectacular, but no riksihi is wanting to get Nishikigi's arms around theirs.
27 Maegashira #10 West Shonannoumi
Shonannoumi Momotaro | 湘南乃海 桃太郎
Takadagawa | Kanagawa
Birthdate: April 8, 1998
Height: 194 cm | 6' 4"
Weight: 185 kg | 407 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #13 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 8-7
Shonnanoumi is on the bigger end of rikishi even in Makuuchi. But he isn't overwhelmingly bigger than everyone else, and he is certainly slower than everyone else. His deliberateness can be an asset when an opponenent makes a mistake, but he also often looks like he is struggling through every match.
28 Maegashira #11 East Midorifuji
Midorifuji Kazunari | 翠富士 一成
Isegahama | Shizuoka
Birthdate: August 30, 1996
Height: 174 cm | 5' 9"
Weight: 114 kg | 251 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #11 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Midorifuji lost his winning record on the final day to Gonoyama, which came after a 6 day winning streak. That was preceded by a 7 day losing streak, after winning day 1. Tellingly, the losing streak had a lot of pushing kimarite and the winning streak had a lot of pulling and throwing.
29 Maegashira #11 West Meisei
Meisei Chikara | 明生 力
Tatsunami | Kagashima
Birthdate: July 24, 1995
Height: 180 cm | 5' 11"
Weight: 157 kg | 345 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #10 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 6-9
Meisei's stablemate became a Yokozuna, so he will be seen more often in the dohyo-iri as a support to Hoshoryu. On dohyo, Meisei is struggling. Like a lot of rikishi who are comfortable grappling and pushing, Mesei often gets caught between and can't control a match.
30 Maegashira #12 East Takarafuji
Takarafuji Daisuke | 宝富士 大輔
Isegahama | Aomori
Birthdate: February 18, 1987
Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 167 kg | 367 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #8 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 5-10
Perhaps Takarafuji was finally showing his age at Hatsu, since he went 5-10 and never had a great moment. Of course, he's done this before and came back to re-establish his Makuuchi bona fides. Just turned 38, he can't keep pulling this trick.
31 Maegashira #12 West Onokatsu
Onokatsu Kazuhiro | 阿武剋 一弘
Onomatsu | Mongolia
Birthdate: May 5, 2000
Height: 185 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 167 kg | 367 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #12 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 7-8
Onokatsu is still finding his way in Makuuchi, but he is also not yet 25 and built like a rikshi should be. The Onosatos and Takerufujis of the world make it seem like everyone should instantly adapt to the top division. Onokatsu still has a strong future, even as he likely struggles to make his way.
32 Maegashira #13 East Nishikifuji
Nishikifuji Ryusei | 錦富士 隆聖
Isegahama | Aomori
Birthdate: July 22, 1996
Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 154 kg | 339 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #17 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Nishikifuji was on the verge of dropping to Juryo and once again did enough to hold onto a Maegashira spot. He has a range of skills, and clearly can hold up with his back to the wall. Perhaps he is just the 40th best rikishi in sumo, and there's nothing more complicated than that.
33 Maegashira #13 West Shishi
Shishi Masaru | 獅司 大
Ikazuchi | Ukraine
Birthdate: January 16, 1997
Height: 193 cm | 6' 4"
Weight: 170 kg | 374 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #4 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 13-2
Shishi just absolutely dominated Juryo in January, even outshining fellow Ukrainian and wunderkind Aonishiki. The massive Ikazuchi man did only go 5-10 in November for his Makuuchi debut. That means his recent performances give entirely contradictory evidence about if he's ready to stick as a Maegashira.
34 Maegashira #14 East Ryuden
Ryuden Goshi | 竜電 剛至
Takadagawa | Yamanashi
Birthdate: November 10, 1990
Height: 189 cm | 6' 2"
Weight: 162 kg | 356 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #3 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 11-4
Ryuden went to Juryo and showed he can pretzel up second-division wrestlers like no one's business. His 11-4 will likely not translate to Makuuchi, where rikishi are just that much better and they have seen more of his slow, awkward sumo.
35 Maegashira #14 West Churanoumi
Churanoumi Yoshihisa | 美ノ海 義久
Kise | Okinawa
Birthdate: May 6, 1993
Height: 177 cm | 5' 10"
Weight: 145 kg | 319 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #9 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 4-11
Churanoumi had his second 4-11 tournament in a row in January. That's certainly less than ideal, but it hasn't kicked him back down to Juryo. For an undersized scrapper who didn't make the top division until he was past 30, holding onto Maegashira is pretty good.
36 Maegashira #15 East Aonishiki
Aonishiki Arata | 安青錦 新大
Ajigawa | Ukraine
Birthdate: March 23, 2004
Height: 180 cm | 5' 11"
Weight: 136 kg | 299 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #5 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 12-3
Aonishiki is here. The Ukrainian starlet has done nothing but win as he's risen through the ranks, and that didn't change when he went 12-3 at Juryo #5. Just 20 years old, he is equally adept at yorikiri and oshidashi. He also may just be figuring things out.
37 Maegashira #15 West Sadanoumi
Sadanoumi Takashi | 佐田の海 貴士
Sakaigawa | Kumamoto
Birthdate: May 11, 1987
Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #1 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Sadanoumi immdeiately bounced back from his Juryo demotion, so he is once again a Maegashira. There are many questions about how much the 37 may have left. On the other hand, few rikishi have the veteran savvy of Sadanoumi.
38 Maegashira #16 East Asakoryu
Asakoryu Takuma | 朝紅龍 琢馬
Takasago | Osaka
Birthdate: September 24, 1998
Height: 177 cm | 5' 10"
Weight: 125 kg | 275 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #2 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Asakoryu was in Makuuchi in November, and he went 6-9. He dropped back to Juryo and went 9-6, so he has returned. On the small end of rikishi, Asakoryu needs to prove he isn't simply outgunned as a Maegashira.
39 Maegashira #16 West Kotoshoho
Kotoshoho Yoshinari | 琴勝峰 吉成
Sadogatake | Chiba
Birthdate: August 26, 1999
Height: 191 cm | 6' 3"
Weight: 172 kg | 378 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #13 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 5-10
Kotoshoho was disastrous in January, and the Makuuchi survival was a matter of retirement and other poor performances. There is a hell of a rikishi in Kotoshoho, but he also frequently seems to be fighting like he's on roller skates. The fact he can still when while slip sliding around is frankly remarkable.
40 Maegashira #17 East Mitakeumi
Mitakeumi Hisashi | 御嶽海 久司
Dewanoumi | Nagano
Birthdate: December 25, 1992
Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"
Weight: 172 kg | 378 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #7 West
Kyushu 2024 Record: 2-13
Mitakeumi was 2-1 after Day Three, and then proceeded to lose his final 12 matches of the Hatsu basho. Mitakeumi's knees are in terrible shape, after a number of injuries and a long career. He still mostly looks like his former Ozeki self until he engages with another rikishi and has no power.
41 Maegashira #17 West Shirokuma
Shirokuma Yuta | 白熊 優太
Nishonoseki | Fukushima
Birthdate: May 25, 1999
Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"
Weight: 172 kg | 378 lbs
Kyushu 2024 Rank: Juryo #4 East
Kyushu 2024 Record: 9-6
Shirokuma will be retuirning to Maegashira-dom after a cursed Makuuchi debut in September. He only won 4 matches and pulled out injured of the last few days. He'll obviously be hoping his second shot at the top division goes better.
42 Maegashira #18 East Tokihayate

Tokihayate should be thankful that Terunofuji retired and meant there was an extra Makuuchi slot available. He wasn't bad in January, but Tokihayate did get a losing record with a 7-8. He may have the skills to stick in Makuuchi, but he's fighting an uphill battle with his size.
